I Had a Ball

‘I Had a Ball’ is the thirteenth track on my debut album “Yesterday Once Moreand it’s definitely a fan-favorite at my performances. From the hilarious musical, ‘I Had A Ball’, this song is one among many other great musical numbers, which makes this production so memorable for theatre fans like myself.

The book, written by Jerome Chodorov, laid the story for the captivating musical. The 1964 production was a huge favorite, mostly because of songs like ‘I Had A Ball’ and ‘The Other Half of Me’.

Jack Lawrence and Stan Freeman composed and wrote the lyrics for this song, as well as all the others in the production. Karen Morrow starred in the musical and originally performed it with her talented vocals. However, aside from her bold tune and melodious pitch, there’s even more to the song when it comes to the music and lyrics.

When you listen to the song, Karen sings with a bright smile and tone to match. Not to mention, the cheerful, uplifting music makes it impossible to not sing along. However, when you hear the lyrics and go deeper into the theme of loneliness, you realize how the song is a mix of both happiness and sadness. The song reflects such a common mix of emotions; you’re happy because you’re hopeful, but you’re still sad because there’s no one to love.

When I look past the mesmerizing lyrics and soulful music, I can see that everyone relates to this emotion as well, and once upon a time, so did I. We’re all human so we’re all deserving of love; need I say more? Even though I’ve long since found the love of my life, the song still brings back fleeting memories.

I rehearsed my version of ‘I Had a Ball’ countless times before finally synchronizing it with my own sense of sound and style. The song is one of my favorites, but I took my time in completing my rendition of the song to make it a part of my album.

Despite the fact that things have changed so much ever since this production was released, the song retains a timeless essence that anyone would be familiar with. It was meaningful to listeners then, and it still makes an impact to this day.

I did my best to recreate the emotions and feelings in my version of the song, while aligning the jazz rhythm that my songs are known for. This rendition is a tribute to the talented composers, writers, and performers of ‘I Had a Ball’ and everyone who has yet to find their ‘other half’!
