When I first listened to the song, I was instantly hooked to its lively rhythm and jazzy theme; I could feel myself singing along and I knew for sure that I had to produce my own rendition of it! My version of This Could be the Start of Something Big is the eleventh track on my album Yesterday Once More, and makes for a lighthearted addition to a list that also includes jazz and love songs.
As the song begins, Steve Allen puts everyone off with a great start that grabs everyone’s attention, and then enters Ann Southern with her energetic gait and voice. Soon after, comes Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme while singing together and showing off their impeccable musical talent! It was definitely an unforgettable performance that left everyone feeling giddy.
This song was a showstopper from the start, which is why in 1956 it won Steve Allen a Sylvania Award. It has even been covered by pop music legends like Aretha Franklin! What makes it so memorable is how the lyrics remain fairly simple, but the dynamic music that plays in the background defines it and enhances the sound of each individual singer.
Every time I sing it at my shows or at parties, Steve Allen’s performance on his show plays in my mind and it feels like I’ve traveled back in time to 1956. It’s no surprise that it makes people feel this way because the gleeful concept and chorus can make anyone forget about a bad day and help them look at the bright side when everything felt perfect. This is the kind of emotion I try to recreate in my music, and judging by how my fans love listening to this song at shows and on my album, I do a pretty good job.
