Swinging Into Spring

Spring is nearly here, so let’s start off the season swinging. Here are a few of my favorite swing tunes to put some pep in your step as the days get longer. Make sure you give yourself plenty of space when you play these songs, because you’ll be dancing before the song ends!

It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing) – Ella Fitzgerald & Duke Ellington

This scat-filled song with a driving rhythm is the perfect way to start off any swing-related list. Ella Fitzgerald, also known as “The First Lady of Swing,” laughs out loud just two lines into this song. That just goes to show, when swing is done right, it’s one of the most fun genres of music.

(Hep! Hep!) Jumpin’ Jive – Cab Calloway

Cab Calloway is often regarded as one of the most energetic band leaders of the big band era. Those who had the pleasure of seeing “Jumpin’ Jive” performed live probably had a difficult choice to make: dance to the swinging rhythm, or watch one of the best entertainers of the era command the stage. Rumor has it that Fred Astaire once called the song’s performance in 1943’s “Stormy Weather" his favorite scene from a movie musical.

Sing, Sing, Sing (With a Swing) – Louis Prima

If you don’t recognize this song’s name, you’ll probably recognize the melody once the horns kick in. Originally written by Louis Prima in the ‘30s, it went on to be covered by the best musicians for decades, including jazz giants like Benny Goodman. As swing enjoyed a revival in the ‘90s, the song was featured prominently in the movie “Swing Kids.”

We’ll Meet Again – Peggy Lee

“We’ll Meet Again” was first made famous by the British singer Vera Lynn. During World War II, Lynn cemented the song’s legacy by singing it to the troops on worldwide tours. Her version is incredible, but I love Peggy Lee, so I usually find myself listening to her version instead. Lee recorded her take in 1942, backed up by Benny Goodman and his orchestra. It’s usually associated with soldiers, which gives it a somber tone for some, but the lyrics are filled with hope and the rhythm swings – and that’s all you can ask for in a great swing song!
