Here’s That Rainy Day/Come in from the Rain Medley

In music, rain brings feelings of nostalgia and love. I think it’s beautiful the way artists can express those feelings through a song. I wanted to bring this side of music into my jazz album, Yesterday Once More, which has more than its fair share of cheerful and uplifting songs. My musical director, Tom Griep, helped me with this and arranged a medley for my debut album. Comprising of the popular songs, ‘Here’s that Rainy Day’ and ‘Come in From the Rain’, this medley is the 12th track on my album.

I start it off with Frank Sinatra’s popular song ‘Here’s That Rainy Day’. Ever since its release, many artists have covered this tune, including Nat King Cole, and it is still popular to this day. Originally, Jimmy Van Heusen wrote the music, a gifted artist who contributed to the likes of songs like ‘High Hopes’ and ‘My Kind of Town’.

I was blown away by the contribution to this medley by my band that so devotedly played the tune, all while making sure that it sounded just right. I assure you, it wasn’t easy, but was definitely worth it. The lyrics, written by Johnny Burke, have a contemplative theme that isn’t hard to recognize but becomes more obvious when Frank Sinatra sings them in his deep, signature baritone. I had a wonderful time recording this for my album, and it’s just as enjoyable when I perform it at shows.

The second song in my rain-themed medley is the well-renowned classic by Melissa Manchester, ‘Come in From the Rain’. It was written by Melissa Manchester and Carole Bayer Sager. Just like ‘Here’s That Rainy Day’, it’s been covered by many artists over the years. At the sound of the opening lyrics, it easily comes off as gloomy and melancholy, but as Melissa hits those higher notes effortlessly, you can begin feeling that air of hopefulness that surrounds the song.

This is a song that I’ve enjoyed singing since forever, and it’s always been widely requested when I perform. However, in my shows, I’d always sing it without much of an instrumental. Tom arranged it for me with a slower and more intense beat so I could record it as part of the medley on my album, and I was amazed at the finished product.

I want to credit my music director Tom Greip because if it weren’t for his efforts, this medley wouldn’t have turned out to be as fantastic as it is. Now that I’ve recorded this medley, nothing makes me happier than being able to share the magic of this well-written composition with my supporters and fans. You can listen to the whole medley, and various other renditions of legendary jazz songs, on my album, Yesterday Once More.
