Christmas Broadway Musicals and Shows to See

With Christmas quickly approaching, everyone’s feeling cheerful as holiday music plays through stores, and fairy lights wrap around the trees and buildings! One of my favorite things to do during Christmas season is to go see Christmas musicals, and what better way to start December than with a Broadway show? Here are some of the best shows you can go see to get into the Christmas spirit.

New York City Ballet: The Nutcracker

Let’s start off with a classic; The Nutcracker. Performed by the New York Ballet, George Balanchine’s fantastic musical is a combination of everything ‘Christmas-y’ – wonder, magic, and togetherness. The beautiful choreography, music, and stage leaves the audience mesmerized with unbelievable performances. This year, it’ll be featuring a large cast of dancers, students, stagehands, and musicians from the School of American Ballet. Prepare to enter a world of enchantment, magic spells, and where love conquers all.

 Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake

A must-see over the holidays! Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake at the Ahmanson Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. Jack and I went to the opening night show for this stunning production just a few weeks ago, and it simply took my breath away. This brilliant interpretation of Tchaikovsky's masterpiece received an Olivier Award in the UK and three Tonys on Broadway.

Catch this show in LA before it ends January 5!

Christmas Spectacular, Starring the Radio City Rockettes

If you’re in the mood for something light-hearted, humorous, and cheerful, Christmas Spectacular is the musical that should be on your list. First performing in 1933, Radio City Christmas Spectacular is 90 minutes long and stars over 140 different performers. It’s a combination of elements like humor, dancing, and singing, with plenty of classic scenes. It’s a treat to see with the entire family!

A Christmas Carol

The Christmas Carol is a timeless classic by Charles Dickens, but this season, it’s coming to Broadway in a completely new adaptation. Since this is a new adaptation, the audience is completely unprepared, but they do have some clue as to what they should expect. After all, it is written by Jack Throne, who also wrote the screenplay for ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’. Nonetheless, the underlining story is still the same; it revolves around Ebenezer Scrooge’s meeting with the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future.

Frozen The Broadway Musical

I’m not the biggest Disney fan, but I figured that this should make the list considering how, for kids, Christmas is often associated with the ‘Frozen’ theme. The musical follows the same storyline as the award-winning animated film, along with its famous scores and original songs. The only difference is that these performances will be accompanied by fantastic dance sequences.

Big Band Holidays at Lincoln Center

Lastly, I’ve added something different in case you’re not in the mood to see a musical this Christmas season. How does live jazz music sound? Experience an exciting night of jazz with performances by the Lincoln Center Orchestra, along with Wynton Marsalis. You’ll get a chance to hear all the music you love hearing during the holidays, live! This makes it a spectacular event for families, friends, and individuals everywhere.

Everyone has a unique way to spend the holidays. Whether you like to stay in and watch Christmas films all day, go out and see live performances, or simply spend time with your family and friends, it’s all about enjoying yourself. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
