5 Jazz Songs You Need on Your Thanksgiving Playlist

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, it’s time to decide which dishes you’ll be making, who you’ll invite to dinner, and most importantly (for me, at least), what music you’ll be playing. Your Thanksgiving playlist needs to have it all: slow tunes while you’re having dinner, cheerful and upbeat melodies for some after-dinner chatter, and jazz, for when everyone feels like dancing. Here are some of my personal favorites that always make their way to my Thanksgiving playlist.

Vince Guaraldi Trio, "Thanksgiving Theme"

The Thanksgiving Theme by the Vince Guaraldi Trio holds a special place in my heart because of the classic tune and soft rhythm. It’s soothing but upbeat at the same time, which makes it the perfect ‘theme song’ for your Thanksgiving dinner. It’s sure to lift everyone’s spirits and make them feel welcome.

Bing Crosby, "I've Got Plenty to Be Thankful For"

When all the guests come over for Thanksgiving dinner, it can take a while before everyone starts getting comfortable and catching up. To set the mood, Bing Crosby’s ‘I’ve Got Plenty to Be Thankful For’ has an easygoing tune that helps everyone feel right at home. But aside from the tune, the lyrics definitely align with the spirit of Thanksgiving the most. Bing Crosby sings about what people should be most thankful for – family and love.

Dee Dee Sharp, "Mashed Potato Time"

An all-time favorite song on my Thanksgiving playlist is ‘Mashed Potato Time’ by Dee Dee Sharp. It’s one of those feel-good songs that you like listening to all year round but sounds especially great at one specific time of the year. Give it a listen for when you’re overwhelmed with Thanksgiving preparations and just need a break. Sure, the song may not be all about Thanksgiving, but I wouldn’t mind playing this at dinner just so everyone can have a fun time; at my home, the holidays are all about dancing and having fun!

Jay & The Techniques, "Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie"

‘Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie’ is a 1967 single by Jay & The Singles that placed #6 on the pop charts. I think it’s the best song to listen in the kitchen while prepping dinner, and during post-dinner cleanup as well. You should always play fast-paced music like this song while working in the kitchen – it’s great for keeping everyone on their feet.

Natalie Cole, "Be Thankful"

If you’re in the mood of listening to an upbeat and catchy tune with elements of jazz rhythm, Natalie Cole’s ‘Be Thankful’ should be on your playlist. As the lyrics describe people from different walks of life, Natalie Cole sings about ‘being thankful’ for what you have, no matter how little or how much.  Aside from its unforgettable lyrics and beat that make you want to get and dance, it sends a powerful message that everyone should acknowledge, Thanksgiving or not.

These are some of my favorite songs on my Thanksgiving Playlist; year after year, I always feel like playing them when the season arrives. What songs are on your Thanksgiving playlist? Let me know in the comments!

With Love, Maggy
